Best Time to Play Golf in Portugal — Month-by-Month Guide
Portugal’s geography produces genuinely different golf seasons by region. The Algarve is ideal in winter; Madeira plays year-round; the Lisbon coast peaks in spring and autumn; the north plays best in summer. This guide covers when to go where and what to expect month by month.

- For winter golf escape from the UK: Algarve (December-March) or Madeira (year-round)
- For ideal conditions, lower prices: shoulder season (October-November, March-May) anywhere
- For summer combination with city/coast: Lisbon and Silver Coast (June-August)
- For the Douro and northern courses: spring (April-May) or autumn (September)
Month-by-Month Guide
January
Algarve: Peak winter golf season. 16-18°C daytime, occasional rain, courses lush. UK demand high — book 6+ weeks ahead.
Madeira: Ideal. 17-19°C, very few rain days, fewest tourists.
Lisbon: Playable but cooler (12-15°C), wetter, fewer visitors.
North: Cold (8-12°C), often wet. Avoid for travel.
Recommended: Algarve or Madeira.
February
Algarve: Best winter month statistically — high sun, low rain, 17-19°C. Tee sheets full.
Madeira: Continues to excel. Whale watching season for non-golfers.
Lisbon: Improving. Some sunny days. 14-16°C.
North: Cold, often grey.
Recommended: Algarve.
March
Algarve: Peak high season continues. Days lengthen. 18-21°C.
Madeira: Spring flowers, very pleasant. 18-20°C.
Lisbon: Spring begins. 16-19°C. Excellent value vs Algarve.
North: Improving. 12-16°C.
Recommended: Algarve still, but Lisbon now competitive on value.
April
Algarve: Conditions ideal — warm, dry, lush courses. Easter peak demand.
Madeira: Excellent. 19-21°C.
Lisbon: One of the best months. 18-21°C. Great value.
North & Central: Spring in full swing. 14-19°C.
Recommended: Any region. UK Easter visitors should book Algarve well ahead.
May
Algarve: Increasingly warm (22-25°C). Lower demand. Excellent value.
Madeira: 20-22°C. Stable.
Lisbon: Peak spring. 19-23°C. Ideal.
North: Best month so far. 16-21°C. Vinho Verde harvest beginning.
Recommended: Anywhere — May is one of Portugal’s best golf months nationally.
June
Algarve: Hot (26-30°C). Play early morning or twilight.
Madeira: Mild (22-24°C). Comfortable all day.
Lisbon: Warm (23-27°C). Atlantic breeze helps.
North: Pleasant (20-25°C). Excellent.
Recommended: Lisbon, North or Madeira. Algarve viable but heat-sensitive players should avoid afternoons.
July
Algarve: Very hot (28-32°C). Twilight rounds preferred. Lower demand from UK.
Madeira: 23-25°C. Ideal.
Lisbon: Warm (25-28°C). Pleasant with sea breeze.
North: Best month for northern courses. 22-28°C.
Recommended: Madeira, North, Lisbon. Algarve cheaper but uncomfortable in middle of day.
August
Algarve: Peak heat (30-34°C). Mostly Portuguese families, fewer UK visitors. Twilight golf only realistic option.
Madeira: 24-26°C. Excellent.
Lisbon: Warm (26-30°C). Many residents on holiday.
North: Excellent (24-28°C).
Recommended: North or Madeira. Avoid Algarve mid-day.
September
Algarve: Recovering. 26-29°C. Excellent value as demand drops.
Madeira: 24-26°C. Continues to excel.
Lisbon: 22-26°C. Ideal weather, fewer tourists, vintage in the Douro.
North: Best month of the year for many. 20-25°C.
Recommended: Anywhere. September is many golfers’ favourite Portugal month.
October
Algarve: Peak shoulder season. 22-26°C. Best balance of weather and demand.
Madeira: 22-24°C. Excellent.
Lisbon: 19-23°C. Lovely conditions.
North: 18-22°C. Vinho Verde and Douro harvest. Pair with wine.
Recommended: Anywhere. October is often the best month of the year for combining golf and other activities.
November
Algarve: Winter demand picks up again. 18-22°C. UK visitors return.
Madeira: 20-22°C. Stable.
Lisbon: 16-19°C. Some rain. Acceptable but starting to soften.
North: 14-18°C. Wetter. Less ideal for travel.
Recommended: Algarve, Madeira.
December
Algarve: Christmas peak. Book early. 16-19°C.
Madeira: 18-20°C. Very pleasant. Mild Christmas alternative to UK.
Lisbon: 14-17°C. Wet days possible. Marginal.
North: Cold and wet. Avoid for golf travel.
Recommended: Algarve or Madeira.

- High season (Dec-Mar in Algarve, year-round in Madeira): book 6-8 weeks ahead for top courses
- Peak shoulder (Mar-May, Sep-Oct anywhere): book 3-4 weeks ahead
