Monte Rei Golf & Country Club Review

Monte Rei Golf & Country Club is widely considered Portugal’s number one golf course and one of the finest in continental Europe. Designed by Jack Nicklaus and opened in 2007 in the eastern Algarve near Tavira, it consistently appears in Golf World’s European Top 100 and is the only Portuguese course to regularly feature in such international rankings.

What Makes Monte Rei Special

Monte Rei delivers a level of exclusivity, conditioning and design quality that’s rare in southern Europe. The course winds through low rolling terrain, with strategic bunkering and large undulating greens that reward both accuracy and creativity. Tee sheets are deliberately limited — fewer rounds per day — which preserves the conditioning and overall experience.

The clubhouse and surrounding villas operate on a private-resort model, making Monte Rei feel closer to a Caribbean luxury enclave than a typical Algarve resort course. Green fees are at the premium end of the Portuguese market, but for the marquee experience, the value is recognised by most visiting golfers.

For the Visiting Golfer

Monte Rei works best as:

  • A bucket-list round during an Algarve trip — most golfers plan one Monte Rei visit per trip
  • A treat day for a group of serious golfers
  • Part of a luxury short-break (the resort includes villa accommodation)

Practical notes: book well in advance (4-8 weeks for winter peak), arrive early to enjoy the clubhouse, expect a 4-4.5 hour pace.

Located further east than most Algarve golf — pair with Quinta da Ria, Quinta de Cima or Castro Marim for a multi-round day in the Sotavento area.
