Palmares Ocean Golf Review
Palmares Ocean Golf in Lagos is the flagship course of the western Algarve. Redesigned by Robert Trent Jones Jr. in 2011 (extending the original 1975 layout to 27 holes), it offers dramatic Atlantic coastal golf with several holes hugging the shoreline.

What Makes Palmares Special
The course is divided into three nine-hole loops with distinct characters — combinations of which form the playing rotations. Several holes run along the Atlantic shoreline, providing some of the most striking ocean-side golf in Portugal. The wider Palmares Ocean Living resort offers accommodation directly adjacent to the course.
For visitors based in Lagos or the western Algarve, Palmares is the centrepiece course — and an essential round for any complete Algarve golf trip.
For the Visiting Golfer
Palmares works best as:
- The flagship round when staying in Lagos / Praia da Rocha
- Part of a western Algarve itinerary (Palmares + Espiche + Boavista + Penina)
- A 27-hole variety stay (different combinations across multiple visits)
Practical notes: book 3-4 weeks ahead. The Atlantic exposure means winds matter — pack a windproof layer.
